Structural change in the chemical industry

The chemical industry is experiencing a global shift in demand structures and value chains. The life cycles of chemical products are becoming ever shorter, while society is increasingly demanding greater energy and resource efficiency.

The chemical industry is characterised by high volatility. Dynamic raw material markets, changing customer requirements and new, digital business models in particular contribute to this. Low production costs in the international environment ensure continuous competitive pressure. Progressive legal regulations in the domestic market pose further challenges. The Ukraine conflict and the associated energy price fluctuations have had a significant impact on cost structures in the German chemical industry and have led to a more intensive search for alternative energy sources.

A high proportion of end customers from growing industries has a positive effect. Innovative business models and patents that create a sustainable competitive advantage also have a positive impact on the company's valuation. Traditional indicators such as customer and supplier dependency, order pipeline and key sales and earnings figures remain of central importance. The ability to adapt quickly to market changes and invest in sustainable technologies is increasingly crucial.

Companies that have clearly defined their core business within the chemical industry and have successfully established themselves in their niche are attractive to investors. M&A activity is currently growing rapidly, particularly among medium-sized companies, which are increasingly becoming the focus of investors. The trend is towards greater consolidation, whereby companies with a clear sustainability strategy are particularly in the spotlight.

Recurring economy

Complex economic networks evolve from linear supply chains. To optimise this process, molecules and materials used are recycled. The development of circular economy models is of central importance to ensure long-term sustainability.

Future trends

While no radical technological achievements are foreseeable in the near future that will call production into question as a whole, companies will in future define themselves as part of an intelligent ecosystem.

Collaboration between players from different industries on one platform will become more likely. Size, economies of scale and productivity and cost optimisation will also remain decisive success factors. Digitalisation and the use of artificial intelligence in production processes offer considerable potential for efficiency gains and innovation opportunities.

Prospects for success in the industry

The competitive environment in the chemical industry is on the verge of upheaval - producers in emerging and resource-rich countries are expanding their capacities and broadening their focus on areas of speciality chemicals that were previously covered by German exports. Sales have risen due to price increases at home and abroad, and growth remains robust - companies are increasingly reaching their capacity limits. The Ukraine conflict has caused energy prices in Europe to rise sharply and affected the supply of raw materials, resulting in additional costs and uncertainties for Germany as a centre for the chemical industry.

Social objectives and changes in demand structures have also had a noticeable impact on consumer behaviour. A wave of consolidation is therefore to be expected, particularly in the SME sector.

Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic and the lingering supply bottlenecks, the sector can look back on a strong first half of 2024. Companies must remain agile and innovative in order to meet increasing expectations.
