The market grew strongly in the last decade, often with double-digit growth rates. The packaging industry in Germany is concerned with the production of packaging both for the logistics sector and for products for the end consumer. A distinction can be made between the sub-segments paper, plastics, metal, glass and wood. The packaging industry occupies an intermediary position between producers and consumers so it must react very flexibly to changes in customer wishes.

The digital printing sector will continue to gain momentum in the coming years. Important drivers of this trend are the increasing variety of goods with simultaneously shorter product cycles and a trend towards individualisation and serialisation of packaging.

Another trend is in the area of product and food safety. Save Food has become a central topic in the industry and will continue to occupy it for some time to come. Around 40 % of food still spoils in the field and is on its way to the customer.

Transnational education (TNB) is a global trend that is becoming increasingly important in the higher education market. More and more educational institutions are running their academic programmes in cooperation with branches or franchising arrangements in different countries. 

Next to TNB, Educational Technology (EdTech) offers some of the greatest growth potential in the education market. International EdTech spending has more than doubled from approximately EUR 135 bn in 2019 to approximately EUR 305 bn in 2020, but to date, it accounts for only 2.6% of global education spending.

The proportion of young adults with tertiary education has increased from 35% to 44% in OECD member countries between 2008 and 2018, reflecting the increased global demand for a skilled workforce.

The energy transition remains an integral part of the German energy landscape with ambitious targets to reduce CO2 emissions by 80 % by 2050 and to increase the share of renewables in total energy consumption to 60 %. The energy and water supply sector in Germany employed almost 260 k people at the end of 2020.

Energy procurement of the future is green, digital, and cross-sectoral. Lush stimulus packages to follow the Corona pandemic are spurring utility development and accelerating the path to efficient energy.
Innovative technologies such as blockchain support the trend. In Vienna, a start-up is currently enabling the demand-based exchange of electricity between neighbours. In the future, such a model will be fully automated.

Approximately 618,000 people are employed in about 6,000 companies, most of which are medium-sized. 

As a result of increased health awareness among the population, the market for alternative meat and dairy products will continue to grow strongly. Companies are already starting to plan cell-based production of meat, fish and dairy products in the laboratory.

At the same time, the trend towards sustainability and regionality will continue to gain importance. Meat consumption in Germany in 2020 reached a historic low. The consumption behaviour of the population is changing continuously.

Germany is the world's third largest producer of machinery. Mechanical and plant engineering is thus considered the leading export and innovation sector of the country. The industry, which is strongly characterised by small and medium-sized enterprises, manufactures complex products for the entire economy and utilises technologically sophisticated preliminary products.

The topic of Industry 4.0 has a significant influence on the structure and development of mechanical and plant engineering. The need for software expertise is continuously increasing - software-based services open up new, innovative business models.

Germany has the largest advertising revenues in Europe - next to the UK. In 2020, the industry generated a market volume of around EUR 46 bn, which corresponds to a share of GDP of about 1.3%. Around 900 k people are employed in the media and advertising industry in Germany. The media industry includes all companies involved in the development, production and distribution of media content for information and entertainment purposes. 

Future trends are clearly marked by the advancing digitalisation of the media and advertising industry. Digital media are moving further and further into the foreground - already in 2020, Facebook and Google together took every third advertising dollar worldwide.

We are also heading into a post-cookie era. Targeted marketing as we know it today will then no longer be possible. This increases the importance of first party data and ID alliances enormously.

The real estate sector - in particular brokerage, management, retail and rental of real estate - is one of the largest economic sectors in Germany. In 2021, its turnover of EUR 346 bn reflects 11% of Germany’s economic gross value added. The sector encompasses approximately 291,000 companies with 293,000 employees and continues to show stable growth. 

An increasing relevance of sustainability affects the German real estate sector, highlighted by the rising number of “green buildings” complying with sustainable regulations in terms of planning, construction and operation. In 2021, certified sustainable property accounted for 26% of individual transactions (corresponding to EUR 12.6 bn). Most recognised certificates are issued by institutions such as the DGNB, LEED or BREEAM. An upswing of green real estate investments is expected to continue as digital transformation and product innovation play a dominating role. 

The real estate industry is on the rise again. According to a study by PwC (2021), confidence in the real estate industry is at its peak although the long-term outlook remains with uncertainties. Future topics playing a key role are as follows: digital transformation, development of strategies regarding the environmental sustainability and its community as well as customer and product innovation (i.e. property technology).

In the era of digitalisation, the German technology sector is of particular importance. The sector not only represents an important branch of the economy with more than EUR 230 b in annual turnover, one million jobs and almost 7% of total economic output. In the context of digitalisation, the sector is above all a central driver of innovation and has a significant impact on other sectors.

Internet of Things and the implementation of the 5G network enable futuristic business models such as autonomous driving, telemedicine and the control of machines over the internet. As early as 2020, around 750 m network-enabled devices will be in operation in Germany alone.
